If you thought that the sole purpose of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) was to promote good gut health and weight loss, you may want to reconsider that thought! There is more to ACV than just losing weight by consuming it on an empty stomach.  ACV has taken the skincare and the hair care industry by storm because of its various benefits that target specific skin as well as hair concerns.

While ACV does work magic for your hair, it is important to note that ACV cannot be used directly on your scalp/hair. Doing so will not just strip your hair of its natural oils, but can also burn your scalp as it is a very strong mixture.

How to use ACV for hair?

There are many ways to use ACV for better hair health. The most important thing to keep in mind here is that you have to dilute it heavily with water for best results. Now that we have the basics sorted, let’s look at some of the benefits of using ACV for hair care.

ACV to combat scalp infections

ACV is packed with anti-bacterial properties. So, not only does it help to combat scalp infections like dryness, itchiness, and dandruff, but regular use can also help to balance the scalp and pH levels of your hair without drying it out.

Take about half a cup of ACV and mix it with water. Use this as a final rinse after you shampoo your hair. Ensure that you rinse the mix thoroughly so that you are left with shiny and gorgeous tresses.

ACV hair mask to tame the frizz

Dry and frizzy hair annoying you? Try this simple DIY hair mask using ACV that will help reduce the frizz and tame your flyaways and make your hair smooth to the touch and also detangle it.

Mix together 1/4th cup of ACV with 1/4th cup of pure distilled water. Use a brush to apply this mix starting from the roots of your hair to the ends. Wrap your hair in a hot towel to let the goodness of the mixture seep into the hair follicles. Wash off with a sulfate-free shampoo and follow up with a conditioner. Using this mask regularly will considerably reduce the split ends too.

ACV mask to condition your hair

This highly hydrating and nourishing hair mask combined with the goodness of ACV is a good conditioner for limp hair.  Mix together two tablespoons of pure coconut oil and one tablespoon of ACV. Blend it well and apply it to damp or dry hair. For extra conditioning, you can add two tablespoons of pure honey and a drizzle of olive oil. Massage your scalp and start with the roots to the ends to ensure an even application. Wrap your head in a hot towel for 30 minutes and wash off with a shampoo and conditioner.

ACV helps cleanse the accumulated dirt and grime

Not only does ACV help restore better scalp health, but can also help to wash that accumulated dirt and grime caused by constant exposure to environmental pollutants. The accumulated build-up can make your hair look limp and greasy. One of the best ways to combat this to use an ACV rinse as mentioned earlier. The accumulated grime and grease and any other product that has caused your hair to clump up can be washed out easily without harming the pH balance of your hair. Using the ACV rinse will help clean your hair thoroughly removing the build-up and promote healthy, smooth, and shiny tresses.

ACV cream mask to nourish your hair

When not to use ACV for your hair

  • If you have exceptionally dry hair. ACV can strip your hair of its natural oils when you have very dry and brittle hair.
  • When you have chemically treated your hair – Chemical treatments like keratin or frequent coloring can cause your hair to become brittle and more prone to damage, if you want to use ACV for treated hair, restrict it to once a fortnight.
